Yoga
At Karma Shala, both the teachers and practitioners are encouraged to explore their own unique understanding of yoga. ‘Intermediate’ as describes many of our classes, implies only that the student should have an existing and fairly regular practise, and that the teacher will incorporate aspects from various styles and form. The term ‘slow’ means just that, classes that do not have the momentum of the faster, more energized ‘flow’. Specific styles are clearly marked where appropriate – Synergy Yoga is generally run in course-form rather than as a drop-in class. Pre & Post Natal is self explanitory. Our Beginners classes offer a safe space to those new to yoga, returning to their practise after some time away or those who simply want to be reminded of the core aspects of all physical practise – the connection between breath and movement.
Our teachers are available for private tuition and can be contacted personally or via – info@karmashalayoga.co.za
HATHA YOGA
This general approach uses yoga postures, breathing techniques, relaxation to help you stretch, unwind and release mental and physical tension. It can also be used as a remedial tool to overcome stress and strengthen and rebalance the body, mind and spirit.
Depending on your needs and desires we might work quite statically, emphasizing the detail, precision and alignment of your practice, or more dynamically, using the breath to link your poses into a flowing sequence.
We can work very gently or more intensely depending on how you are feeling during your session.
If you want a one-on-one session or have a small group of friends who want to learn yoga, our private classes are tailor-made to suit your needs.
ASHTANGA VINYASA YOGA
Ashtanga is a traditional form of yoga, with a lineage that some practitioners claim goes back thousands of years. Sometimes also called “Power Yoga”, this tradition yoga went mainstream when Madonna and Sting took it up.
The Ashtanga method involves synchronizing the breath with a series of flowing postures.
The aim is a kind of moving meditation that that develops mental focus detoxifies and aligns the body while building strength, stamina and flexibility.

YOGA SYNERGY
Yoga Synergy was established in Sydney Australia in 1984. The directors, who are both qualified physiotherapists, have adapted the traditional practices to suit western bodies and minds.
Yoga Synergy is a flow-style meditative practice, linking postures with the breath while maintaining an awareness of anatomical and physiological alignment, and allowing students to progress with guidance at their own pace.
In its full advanced form, this yoga is as challenging and dynamic as any of the traditional yoga styles can get, and in its simplest form, it is as gentle and soft as one may need or desire – it is up to the individual how hard one works in a Yoga Synergy style class.
Yoga synergy is a highly evolved form of dynamic “power” yoga. It represents a synthesis between AshtangaYoga, Iyengar Yoga, Tibetan yoga and modern medical science. For more on Yogasynergy check www.yogasynergy.com.au

THERAPY YOGA
If you have a particular therapeutic need, we can design a package for you.
This may include a focus on postural corrective exercise, working to heal an injury, or even dealing with a long term illness. There is a wide range of traditional therapeutic “tools” to draw on including asana (postures), pranayama (breath work), relaxation, visualization, and meditation.
Yoga is a remarkable healing process that empowers ones own inner healer to step forward.
CORPORATE CLASSES
Just because we are yogis, that doesn’t mean we don’t understand stress.
In fact we have a corporate stress management package developed by a psychologist that can help your staff understand stress and then turn it around.
Using modern medical understanding to explain the physiology and psychology of stress, we then teach practical methods to improve concentration, shift bad moods and inoculate against the burden of stress that leads down the road to burnout.
Whether it’s a corporate stress management program, a lunch hour power yoga class, or a once in a while team building yoga treat, contact us and we can organize it for you.
